Anne M Stone PhD. is an Assistant Professor of Communication at Rollins College, Winter Park, FL. Her research interests focus on the role of communication in improving health and relationships across the lifespan. She completed her PhD in Communication with specializations in health and interpersonal communication from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.

Dr. Stone published an article in Journal of Applied Communication Research that explores how nurses communicate with patients and families coping with Alzheimer’s disease. Theoretically, this project had important implications for building knowledge of dilemmas of communicating in illness contexts. Practically, the data highlighted the ways in which communication affects outcomes. This information may be usefully applied to nurses’ training aimed at improving quality of life for patients and avoiding burnout for nurses. Findings from this paper were featured in more than 75 national and local news outlets, including U.S. News & World Report, HealthDay, Fox News, ABC, NBC, and CBS. Other projects have examined the role of uncertainty and information management for pre- and post- transplant patients, which culminated in an article published in the journal Qualitative Communication Research, and examined the experiences of uncertainty in a surgical waiting room, which was published in The Permanente Journal.
