Myrene Magabo

Myrene is an ardent advocate of listening and is an active member of the Global Listening Center and has served as  Director and Chair of GLC’s Instructional Listening Division. She has also been a member of the Ethics and Membership Selection Committee.  Myrene is also a member of the Board of Directors of the American Communication Association, an association she has joined since 2006.  She has also taken an active part as member of the International Communication Association (ICA) having served as ICA Student Board Member and Early Career Representative (SECAC) and Co-Chair (May 2019 to May 2021). She will begin to serve as Secretary of ICA’s Instructional Division starting May 2021 until 2022.

Myrene specializes in Communication, Education, Research, and Strategic Development Planning, with a philosophical view that no single field is sufficient in solving world problems.

She is a graduate of Doctor of Communication from the University of the Philippines-Open University. She earned her master’s degree in Communication from the University of the Philippines College of Mass Communication, completed all academic courses for the Ph.D. program in Communication from UP College of Mass Communication, and a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from the University of San Agustin. She completed 18 units of M.A. in Education courses: Social and Philosophical Foundation of Education, Critical Thinking Strategies, Applied Linguistic, and Educational Technology from the University of the Philippines – College of Education.

While teaching here in the United States, Myrene managed to secure a Graduate Certificate in Instructional Design from the University of Wisconsin and received rigorous training from professors in Instructional Design. She undertook rigid training for course development and facilitation, earned a Certificate for Online Teaching from Penn State University, and completed training as a Certified Advanced Facilitator from the University of Phoenix. She also completed 16 units of Master of Arts in Education/Adult Education and Training courses consisting of Curriculum Theory and Instructional Design, Organizational Communication for Adult Education and Training, Facilitating Change, Facilitating Online Learning, and Social Media for Professional Learning.

Her 15 years of academic teaching experience since 2002 to date includes teaching Micro and Macro Economics, Labor Economics, Planning for Economic Development, Communication Arts courses, Effective College Writing and Research, Effective Speech Communication, Communication Theory, Foundations of Mass Communications, Communications Research, Introduction to Communication Technology and Information Management, Effective Communication, and Critical Thinking courses. With her teaching experience in the Philippines, Myrene found herself engaging in the same profession in the United States. She started as English Faculty at Father Duenas Memorial School in Guam and became Communications Instructor at Lancaster Community College in California and Penn State University – Hazleton from 2008 to 2015. Myrene has been a faculty of the University of Phoenix Online since 2008 and to this date.
